Madison County Football: Playoff Time

Stats by Greg Eades and Roger Jester

It’s the start of the second season.

With the dust clearing from the regular season, we find three Madison County high school football teams enter the time when if you win, you keep playing.

This weekend, two teams (West Jefferson and London) will play at home, while Jonathan Alder is on the road.

On Friday, the No. 4 ranked Red Raiders (8-2) host the No. 13 seeded Blue Devils (6-3) from Zanesville. You can listen to this game live thru great coverage by our friends at ReadyFM (105.1).

London has a solid ground game, led by Antwuan Burns, who led the county by averaging close to 150 yards per game. The Red Raiders boast other solid runners including Noah Sollars, Ayden Cooper, and Isaiah Jones.

Through the air, quarterback Dylan Combs has found a go-to receiver in the speedy Cooper.

Defensively, London is very stingy, allowing just 10 points a game. They are led by Thadd Huff (11 sacks) and Jones (89 tackles) – two of the hardest hitters in the league. Antonio Burns and Jonathan Schooley contributed 3.5 sacks each.

For the Blue Devils, Jordan Martin is the player to look out for as the running back has piled up many yards on the ground in a number of games for Zanesville.

JONATHAN ALDER at EASTMOOR ACADEMY – 7pm Friday — UPDATE … to be held at MIFFLIN HIGH SCHOOL due to field conditions

Also on Friday, the No. 10 ranked Pioneers (6-4) head to the No. 7 seeded Warriors (6-3) at Eastmoor Academy.

While visiting the school that has Archie Griffin as an alum, Jonathan Alder hopes to put their solid running game on display. With breakaway threat Cameron Jewell (county leader with 1,180 yards) and reliable veteran Will Heisler, the Pioneers have a terrific 1-2 punch on the ground.

Through the air, Jonathan Keith and Wyatt Kaizer have been the main targets for QB Tabor Headings.

On the defensive end, Chase Maynard leads the way with 104 tackles. Heisler led the way with three interceptions, while Simon Fenik and Keith picked off a pair each.

Eastmoor has a tough defense, recording shut outs against their last two opponents.

On Saturday, No. 3 seeded West Jeff (9-1) welcomes in No. 14 Valley (4-6). The Roughriders suffered their only blemish on the road at Mechanicsburg last week and the Indians have dropped their last four. You can listen to this game live thru great coverage by our friends at ReadyFM (105.1).

WJ has a high-powered offense that has outscored the opponents by 250-plus points this season. They are led by quarterback Tyler Buescher who threw for just shy of 2,900 yards and connected on 29 touchdowns. His main target is MJ Book who hauled in 17 of those TDs (with 932 yards). Adam Fry had 657 yards receiving.

The Roughriders pride themselves on a balanced attack, and they have a pair of running backs who exemplify that. Hayden Salyer (885 rush/415 receive) and Spencer George (367 rush/363 receive) make it even more difficult for opposing defenses.

Speaking of defense, it has been a team effort for West Jeff. Leading a balanced defense in tackles are Jon Rickenbacker, Garrett Higgins, Ethan Hostetler, and Canyon Schneider. Asher Wilson recorded five sacks.
