MECHANICSBURG – Something had to give.

When West Jefferson visited Mechanicsburg on Friday with both teams coming in undefeated, it was likely whatever squad was able to get some breaks would come away victorious.

Mechanicsburg used a solid running game to control the clock and keep the usually high scoring West Jeff offense off the field as the host Indians came away with a 30-13 victory. The home squad managed 262 yards on the ground, and kept the ball twice as long as the Roughriders.

Things started out great for West Jeff as Adam Fry returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to stun the home crowd.

Mechanicsburg embarked on an 11 play drive, but their efforts were thwarted by the WJ defense, and  the Indians had to turn the ball over on downs.

The teams went back and forth much of the remainder of the first quarter until Indian Mason Hess came down with an interception.

That is when Mechanicsburg started the ground control game with running back Jake Hurst (145 yards on 25 carries) and quarterback Aaron Conley (130 yards on 24 carries).

It was an all-Hurst four-play drive that culminating in a tying seven yard touchdown run.

The home squad took a 10-7 lead at the half thanks to a 21 yard Danny Mascadri field goal.

The strong defenses duked it out after the break. The Roughriders were led on defense by Jarrett Simmons, Michael Pettry, and Garrett Higgins.

The last two minutes of the third quarter and first two minutes of the fourth went a long way in deciding the outcome. First, Mechanicsburg’s Hurst went in from a yard out. Then, Mascadri caught a five yard TD pass from Conley.

The Roughriders attempted to mount a comeback. West Jeff quarterback Tyler Buescher completed a pass to Fry, who raced 58 yards for a score.

Unfortunately, Mechanicsburg responded with one more Hurst touchdown in the final three minutes to complete the scoring.

West Jefferson now awaits its opponent for the first round of the post season, beginning next Saturday.
