Sprouting up another victory.

Whether it is shitake, Portobello or button, mushrooms are known for their hearty consistency.

The same can be said for the season the West Jefferson High School football team is having. It has been the consistency in all facets of the game that accounted for the Roughriders being undefeated going into Friday’s match up with conference foe Fairbanks.

It was only right that on National Mushroom Day the Roughriders showed that solid play can sprout up from anywhere as a total team effort led to a 19-0 win over the visiting Panthers. The victory took West Jeff to a perfect 9-0 on the season thus far.

The defense recorded yet another shut out, this time led in tackles by Ryan Danford with nine. Roughriders Ethan Hostetler and Garrett Higgins each contributed seven a piece.

Although the time of possession was within eight seconds of each other, the Roughriders more than doubled the Panthers in yards (385 to 177).

West Jeff would get all of the points it needed in the second quarter.

First, Roughrider quarterback Tyler Buescher connected with MJ Book from three yards out for a short TD score. Then, with time winding down in the first half, Buescher passed to Adam Fry who raced 80 yards for a touchdown.

Just like the first quarter, the third quarter saw no scoring.

The Roughriders rectified that in the fourth as Spencer George ran it in from five yards out.

The win sets up a terrific match up next Friday as West Jefferson travels to Mechanicsburg for a contest of undefeated teams.
