SPRINGFIELD – A diamond in the rough.
Coming into week four and looking for their first win of 2021, the Jonathan Alder High School football team was looking for a spark.
Uncharacteristically, Alder had dropped the first three contest of the young football season.
The Pioneers found another gem in the running game as Cam Jewell tallied three touchdowns as Alder dominated host Northwestern 45-14.
Jewell started the scoring with a short two-yard run. After a touchdown by teammate Tabor Headings, Alder was ahead 14-0.
Following an answering score from the home Warriors, Jewell got back those points with a nice 40 yard jaunt.
Pioneer special team took center stage before halftime. First Nick Finke blocked a punt, ending with a Jackson Bennett recovery touchdown in the end zone. Then, Alder kicker Charlie Aurin connected for a 30 yard field goal with two seconds remaining to give the Pioneers a 31-7 advantage at the break.
Alder dominated on the defensive end all night. Their intense play was exemplified in the form of a 25 yard interception return by Chase Maynard.
Jewell hit the end zone one more time on his second 40-yard scoring scamper.
Northwestern finished off the scoring with a touchdown pass-catch.
The Pioneers look to build off this initial victory as they host North Union next week.
